How the ratings work

Kitchen cabinet ratings assume each line is upgraded to the top level of construction available, usually all plywood construction.

A grade of A for construction quality will not be equal across different price levels, as the more expensive price point cabinets will have far nicer finishes and construction options.

Note: The highest grade for Quality in any frameless European style cabinet line is a B. While frameless cabinetry is easier to access and is sleeker looking, it is also less durable than the best made framed cabinetry.

The value grade we give is not a rating about the quality of the cabinetry but a rating of how good an investment a cabinet line is considering its cost.

For example, many of the most expensive well-made cabinet lines receive lower marks on value even though as designers we think the cabinetry is the best in its class.

These lines receive lower grades on value simply because there are competitors offering the same quality at slightly lower prices. If price is no object, then we recommend ignoring the value rating in the cabinetry priced in the 6-price point.

Disclosure

Main Line kitchen design acknowledges that we are dealers for the following cabinet lines: Wellsford, Bishop, Brighton, Fabuwood, Legacy Presidential, Timberlake and CNC.  We could be prejudiced towards ranking these lines more favorably, but we have tried to be impartial. However, since the cabinet lines we carry were chosen specifically for their construction quality and value, our ranking them well should not be a surprise.

Hi, is there a reason that Omega framed or Omega frameless is not included in these ratings?
    thank you

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi John,
They are both listed under Dynasty by Omega. This is the original way the brand was referred to, but it is confusing so I’m adding them listed both ways to avoid confusion.

      Hi John,
I’m also doing this on the 2023 cabinet ratings so look their if you want the most up to date listing. Link below:

I have three quotes very similar in price but I am not sure which cabinets are better quality. I’m not looking for very fancy but decent quality. The three choices are Conestoga, Forevermark and Waypoint 400 series. They all claim to have solid wood doors and plywood boxes.

I’d greatly appreciate your advice. Thanks

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Ligia,
These are all very similar. Is the Conestoga sold through a dealer or only online? If online we never recommend buying cabinets online.
Getting a good design is more important than the brand choice between these three lines and as almost everyone’s designs that we see need improvement-

      My MANTRA remains:
People worry about cabinet quality and price far more than they worry about their designs. This is because they aren’t kitchen designers themselves and don’t understand how poor their designs usually are. If you listen to one of our podcasts this is usually a central issue. The Podcast below illustrates how different designs can be from what a homeowner might expect, while still staying within their budget. So, it makes little sense splurging on cabinets and appliances, when there are design improvements left on the table.

I am trying to decide between Cardell Designer versus Medallion Premium kitchen cabinets which I checked in Menards. Which one is a better quality and price? I am getting the 42’’ white shaker style cabinets. Any other designers/companies recommendation from you? Please Advise

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Erin,
I don’t know anything about Cardell and Menards gives no information on their site. Medallion is probably both more expensive and better made but this is only my guess.
I always worry when people mention that they are getting 42″ wall cabinets that their ceilings are 8 feet high as that would be a major mistake. I also worry about the experience of the Menards designer. Feel free to vet your design on our helpline and podcast.

    Hi Paul,

Do you have any rating or advice regarding the Wynnbrooke Cabinetry Carolina Collection kitchen cabinet products? I believe these are made in the Gastonia NC facility.

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Keith,
I don’t know the Brand. They appear to be a Semi Custom Frameless line. No information on the site about how they are made.

  6. Jill

Thoughts on Massachusetts Design or Landmark Luxury ? That’s what a kitchen dealer near me sells, but looks like they might not be on your list. Would love to know if they are reputable and a good value! Appreciate any insights.

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Jill,
landmark is made by Tedd Wood which we review. MD looks good too although I don’t know them.

  7. Lea Sheppard

    Hi Paul,
We are trying to decide between Kraftmaid and Fabuwood for our kitchen remodel? Fabuwood does not have any showrooms in our area, and I’m nervous that the cabinets will “look cheap,” because they are so much cheaper! Do you have any recommendations, advice, or thoughts? Thanks so much!

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Lea,
You don’t say what door style or finish you are selecting, and I don’t know your design so it makes it hard to evaluate. However, the advantages of Kraftmaid is in the vast variety of wood species, finishes, sizing, and door styles.

If you are selecting for example, a white shaker kitchen, and Fabuwood makes all the sizes you need, then the Fabuwood would actually probably look better than the Kraftmaid. IMO you would be foolish to spend more on slightly lesser looking cabinetry, all to have things available to you that you aren’t selecting. Since the Fabuwood is sanded and painted overseas where labor is less expensive the seams on the Fabuwood cabinetry will be less noticeable and the finish smoother for painted cabinetry.

Customers have a hard time understanding what they are paying for in cabinetry. The more expensive brands are often not better constructed nor is a painted finish superior. However the more expensive brands WILL offer nicer stains, FAR more variety, and options that the less expensive brands do not. This is why my mantra below is so important to consider:

When you say “All Wood” who do you mean? I have found All Wood Fast and All Wood Cabinetry.

Also thank you for taking the time to make these ratings. This has been such an overwhelming process and your information has been a lifesaver!

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Liz,
      This is the website. https://www.allwoodcabinets.com/

Be careful ordering from an online source. The cabinets you buy may be well-constructed and inexpensive, but you are missing the most important and valuable part of the remodeling process. IE working with an experienced kitchen designer. Ordering cabinetry without that component pretty much assures that you are making poor decisions.

Remember, contractors do not count as design professionals. They are worse than having no design experience at all. Every good kitchen designer will tell you that the absolute worst designs we see come prom periphery professionals like contractors, architects, interior designers, builders, and real estate agents. This is because when these people design kitchens, they haven’t taken the time to learn any of the rules of kitchen design. But they are arrogant enough to believe that they know what they are doing. That combination always proves the saying “a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.”

  9. Niru Pradhan

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response! We are hoping to take advantage of the painted green color from Alan + Roth. It seemed to be the most affordable option for that color option. Are there any other cabinet manufacturers you would recommend for a dark green painted cabinet color?

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Niru,
That type of green will not be available for less. However, American Woodmark is sold at Home Depot as both American Woodmark AND Allen and Roth. Lowes sells the same product as Shenendoah, and independent dealers like us sell it as Timberlake. Find the best designer to work with. The pricing should be very close everywhere that sells them under whichever name, but working with a better designer can help you avoid mistakes, save money, and prevent other problems.

  10. Niru Pradhan

Thank you very much for posting this information. I’m looking for cabinets for a basement bar and laundry room. I’m wondering what your thoughts are about Allen + Roth (sold exclusively at Lowe’s). I’m price conscious but looking for the best quality my limited budget can buy – so am comparing to 21st Century, Cubitac, Fabuwood, Green Forest, J&K, and ProCraft. I’m in the DC area. Thanks in advance for your advice!

    1. pmcalary[ Post Author ]

      Hi Niru,
We chose to carry Cubitac as our least expensive brand and Fabuwood (the top of the class) as our second most expensive choice. Timberlake (pretty much the same thing as Allen and Roth made by American Woodmark) is our next highest priced line. All the other brands we have considered or sold in the past, and I think are good, but I prefer the selections we chose.

You don’t mention a style and color but in a painted finish Allen and Roth is not the best value. You need to upgrade Alen and Roth to the top level to equal the other brands in construction quality and doing that prices them higher than all the others. AND their painted finish is not as nice as most of the others. So less of a value. Unless you are taking advantage of the nice maple finishes, or the green color, or some other offerings that only American Woodmark IE Allen and Roth offers.

Knowing this type of information along with being a better designer is why customers should shop for their kitchen designer just as much as their brand.
