Designing Kitchens for Social Media: When the Kitchen Becomes the Show
As a designer for Main Line Kitchen Design, I’ve had the opportunity to design kitchens for three social media influencers who use their kitchens as the setting for cooking shows and video content. These projects have taught me that designing a kitchen for someone who cooks on camera requires a different approach.

Like the hundreds of kitchens Main Line Kitchen Design designs for tri-state area homeowners, social media influencer’s kitchens need to provide optimal workspace, with plenty of counter space, smart appliance placement, easy access to ingredients and lots of storage. There’s also another customer sitting at the island—the camera.

Unlike traditional television productions, these cameras are often mounted on tripods and positioned very close to the action. That means the island, backsplash, range hood, and cabinet walls can all become part of the backdrop.
When designing these kitchens, I have to consider what the camera will see from multiple angles.
I look for opportunities to create visual focal points that frame the person cooking without making the kitchen feel overly busy. The kitchen becomes part workspace and part studio set.
The island is particularly important because it is often where the action takes place. Its size, proportions, countertop space, and finished back panel all matter—not just for functionality, but for how they appear on camera.
At the same time, function still comes first. The chef needs an efficient workflow, accessible storage and enough room to actually cook. After designing three of these kitchens, I’ve learned that the best influencer kitchens are those where the production requirements are seamlessly incorporated into the design.

For social media influencers, a great kitchen needs to work from every angle—not only for the person cooking, but for the audience watching on the other side of the camera. For homeowners, while there is no audience, there are dozens and dozens of criteria that contribute to great kitchens.
Here’s another blog that highlights some of them – xxx. Our president, Paul McAlary, also hosts a weekly podcast during which he responds to callers’ questions on making their kitchen great.
